Ethiopia launches satellite TV transmission platform

April 21, 2017 – The Information Network Security Agency (INSA) has launched a national integrated satellite TV transmission platform that would serve public and community media in Ethiopia, reports ENA.

INSA Director General Major General Teklebirhan Wolde-Aregay said the platform named “Ethiosat” will contribute to ongoing efforts to ensure equality and fairness in the use of media as well as to create an informed community.

Currently, 15 to 20 TV channels are renting satellites individually to transmit their programs, the managing director said, adding that the platform would offer all TV channels the ability to transmit from a single platform.

In addition, he noted that it will also drastically reduce the foreign exchange fees currently paid to satellite service providers, beyond ensuring their security and expanding access.

Ethiosat will allow Ethiopia to have its own satellite TV transmission platform which would be based on the digitization of TV transmission, he added.

According to Major General Teklebirhan, the agency is also working to transfer TV transmission technology from analog to digital. (ENA)
